I'm a new resident in Oklahoma: what do I do with my license?

Moved to Oklahoma? This page puts in one place what to do and when, and which road rules to check. It is based on the website of the Service Oklahoma and on its driver manual. This site is independent and is not the Service Oklahoma.

Compare with the state you moved from

Choose the state you came from to see the main differences from Oklahoma. Every value comes from that state's official manual (with the page number) or from its license guide. Where a manual does not state a rule, we say so instead of guessing.

Each rule comes from the Oklahoma driver manual or from the license guide, with its source.

Official steps for moving to Oklahoma

  • Becoming an Oklahoma resident

If you are a new resident of Oklahoma and have moved from another state, you need to transfer your license to an Oklahoma Driver License, Learner Permit or Commercial Driver License (CDL), and register your vehicles. A driver with an out-of-state license must apply for an Oklahoma Driver License when they establish residency. Upon establishing residency, your vehicles must be registered in Oklahoma. This may not apply to military personnel and their spouses.

  • Transferring a driver license

Bring your out-of-state license to your visit, along with the documents that the Transfer a Driver License page lists. To transfer a Driver License and make it REAL ID compliant, you need 2 proofs of Oklahoma residency. This guide does not say which tests apply to a transfer, because the Service Oklahoma page and the manual describe it in different ways. Check the Transfer a Driver License page.

  • Transferring a learner permit

If you are a new resident with a learner permit from another state, you apply for an Oklahoma Learner Permit. The Transfer a Learner Permit page lists what to bring. You can receive credit toward the time you must hold a permit in Oklahoma for the time you held your out-of-state permit, and the page explains how. If you are 18 or older and hold a learner permit from another state, you are eligible to apply for a Class D Driver License once 30 days have passed since the issue date of your out-of-state permit. For more information on transferring a Learner Permit from another country, visit a Licensing Office.

  • Visitors

A nonresident who is at least 16 and licensed in their home state or country does not need an Oklahoma license. Oklahoma accepts valid and current international Driver Permits and Licenses if you are temporarily traveling through the state. If you intend to reside in Oklahoma, you should apply for an Oklahoma license.

  • Military members and their families

Military service members and their families who live and drive in Oklahoma may do so with a valid out-of-state driver license. To change your residency and Driver License to an Oklahoma credential, you must provide an Oklahoma address to claim in-state residency. This transaction must be done in person. If you are on active duty, a civilian contractor with the U.S. Armed Forces, or a dependent of one of them, and you live outside Oklahoma with a valid Oklahoma driver license, your license will not expire while you are away. The manual says military personnel stationed outside Oklahoma do not have to renew until 60 days after they return to Oklahoma.
