Why the units differ

In the United States, speed limit signs and distance signs are in miles, fuel is sold by the gallon, and temperatures are given in Fahrenheit. If you learned to drive somewhere that uses the metric system, converting in your head is hard at first.

A useful anchor: 1 mile is about 1.6 km, so 60 mph is about 97 km/h. And a US gallon is smaller than a UK gallon (3.785 L against 4.546 L), which matters when you compare MPG figures.
